Early on the morning of July 22nd Chief Massirio, who was off duty at the time, was traveling Southbound on Route 9 in Cromwell when he witnessed the vehicle in front of him loose control, striking a bridge parapet before coming to a stop in the median of the highway.
Chief Massirio stopped to assess the accident. Immediately reconizing the medical emergency he contacted Cromwell Fire Dispatch starting services, removed the patient from the vehicle, and began to perform CPR in the median.
Cromwell units, including Captain Escales who was on duty as a CFD Firefighter/EMT at the time, began arriving on scene. Cromwell personnel, with Chief Massirio continuing to assist, regained and lost a pulse multiple times on scene eventually stabilizing the patient to a point where she was able to be transported. Chief Massirio remained on scene assisting with the patient's son and his friend, who were uninjured, and was able to provide State Police with a detailed account of the accident.
The actions of the personnel involved on the morning of the 22nd ultimately lead to the patients discharge from the hospital within one week of the accident, full recovery within the following two weeks, and a very grateful reunion with family.

The patient attended the award ceremony presenting the shift with gifts including merchandise provided through her company, to which they have penned the term "Harder, Deeper, Faster 30:2" advocating for CPR.
CPR is a simple skill set that saves lives and can be learned at any age.
